Disney sent us a copy of Vampirina at the Beach and it was scooped up immediately by my Iz who said, “Oooo, look, yay! Another one! And she’s surfing, like me.” When I told her that Vampirina Ballerina was coming to Disney Junior her excitement tripled. Although she’s a vampire, Vampirina is a relatable character for kids. We’re there with her through her little ups and downs, love her positivity, words of advice and encouragement.
Reading time is a blast with Vampirina Ballerina! Colours are bright and characters are diverse, quirky and likeable. You’ve got monsters of all kinds, even a boy/werewolf, who’s timid and sad at times, but with Vampirina’s encouragement and reassurance, he quickly gets back to enjoying the night of beach activities. Pham’s illustrations are bright. Purple and green tones keep each page constant, which ensures that the ocean of details aren’t overwhelming, instead very engaging. When reading was finished, the foldout and full page spreads were turned back to over and over again. Vampirina at the Beach, the entire Vampirina series, is cute, cool, colourful, spirited, spine-chilling fun.
