We are collecting retellings of Little Red Riding Hood. We love her spunk! I saw the cover of Red, by Jed Alexander, and I knew it would be a treasure. Just look at that confident young girl in her bright red hoodie and black boots, and that daunting wolf tail slithering through the trees. Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? Not this kid.
Red is a wondrous wordless retelling in limited colours—greyscale tones and splashes of red. The size of the wolf contrasted against a very young Red makes for striking imagery. The format of the book allows for a pleasant wander through the woods, through the story, and for moments when readers see things Red doesn’t. She’s in for a surprise once she reaches Grandma’s house!
As you can see, this retelling is kid friendly. Perfect for preschoolers and early primary, but also enjoyable for those slightly older. Get them using their imagination and telling the story. Enhance storytime further with a red-themed cupcake tea party!
Be sure to pick up Red this April.
