Being Halloween season, candy corn is everywhere. Here in New Zealand, we’re all about Kiwicorn!! “Who is whimsical, witty and wonderfully weird? Kiwicorn!” Written and illustrated by local talent, Kat Merewether, Kiwicorn is an adorable and uplifting story about the cutest hybrid creature, fluffy and cuddly as all kiwis are, with a sprinkling of unicorn magic.
Who knows that diversity is beautiful? Kiwicorn! Who cares about others and our planet? Kiwicorn! Who is confident, creative and courageous? Kiwicorn! Who fights for equality? Kiwicorn! The story reads like this—an alliterated question is posed to readers, for example, “Who is gentle, gutsy and good-hearted?” The delightfully quirky illustrations depict Kiwicorn with these character traits. Kiwicorn then shares short, sweet messages that kids can latch on to and be inspired by.
There’s a great pace to the story, humour and an abundance of positivity. I can imagine wonderful and lively interactions if read in a group situation. Kids will call Kiwicorn! Kiwicorn! and just before the turn of the last page, if not sooner, they’ll fall in love—accordingly, after that last turn, that’s when the Kiwicorn magic takes effect and kids will know that, like Kiwicorn, they are strong, sassy and smart, wild, wispy and often whiffy, incredible, independent individuals.
