“To my son, Harland. This book was written in the first two months of your life as I tired to make sense of it all for you. These are the things I think you need to know.” —Dedication in Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth.
Oliver Jeffers creates a narrative from the heart. A sincere, funny, wonderful welcome to the world full of facts, advice, messages of kindness, empathy and hope. No doubt, this was a labour of love, and it shows. Yes, Jeffers’ work is always impeccable, but this one for me goes beyond perfection. All parents everywhere, especially new parents, will want to pick up Here We Are right away! The voice is so natural and belonging. An easy conversation with so much wonder and wisdom—wisdom which I suspect was passed down through the generations. In the back matter, you’ll find a quote from Jeffers’ dad, “There are only three words you need to live by, son: respect, consideration and tolerance.”
Some of that wisdom… “People come in many shapes, sizes and colours. We may all look different, act different and sound different…but don’t be fooled, we are all people…Be patient, you’ll learn how to use words soon enough…use your time well. It will be gone before you know it…be kind…if you need to know anything else just ask.”
The illustrations are bright and beautiful. Unmatched, in my humble opinion. The characters depicted are diverse and delightful. Here We Are—explore its pages and be enchanted.
