I’m amazed at the variety of alphabet books out there. ABZZZ… A Bedtime Alphabet, by Isabel Minhós Martins and Yara Kono, was my baby girl’s pre-nap read today. Although, she very much enjoyed giving the yawning child on the cover her pacifier, lol, this book is better suited to older kids (3-7 years). “This book never fails…Some people begin to yawn before they get to letter B. Others stay awake till P. Nearly everyone is snoring by the time they reach S. How many letters will there be before you drop off?”
I’m planning on reading this tonight with Haz and Iz. I’m predicting that we’ll make it all the way to Z, as my bigs are night owls. So, I’m not sure it’ll work magic and put them to sleep, but I do love this book because of the questions asked throughout.
After dinner is a busy time for us, as I’m sure it is for most. Showers, teeth, picking up the clutter, making sure homework is done. ABZZZ… will be the perfect wind-down after all of that. Single pages display letters of the alphabet in order, a word, and a short, sleepy sentence or paragraph: “C – Cat – Can you curl up and purr like a little cat? Isn’t it cosy?” There’s two of those questions I’m talking about. Other great ones, “K – Kiss – Everyone in your family needs a kiss before going to sleep. Have you kissed everyone goodnight yet? Is anyone still awake?” and, “O – Off-switch – Not sleepy yet? Do you still feel a tingle in your toes? Quick, find your off-switch! Try pressing your nose. Did that work?” The interactive aspect of this book is something I’m looking forward to experiencing. Already imagining the cuteness of my girl when she curls up like a cat, already imagining the cheeky comments from my boy insisting that we are indeed owls and should stay awake for the night.
Kono’s illustrations remind me of Chris Haughton’s work. They’re graphic. Fun. If this book is indeed a magical sleep inducing story, I’ll let you know.
UPDATE: This book is indeed magic!!
We did make it all the way to Z, but as soon as they pressed the red off switch on the page, they accepted that it was time for sleep. Haven’t heard a peep since.
They’re fast asleep!!!! I’m buying this book!
